Inmate records in Virginia are maintained at the county level by each sheriff's office. To find someone currently in a Virginia county jail:

1. Select the county where the arrest occurred from the directory below.
2. Use the official inmate search tool linked on the county page — enter the person's first and last name.
3. Check the Virginia Department of Corrections if the person isn't in the county system — they may have been transferred to a state facility.
4. Try the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator at bop.gov if federal charges are involved.

Records typically update every 2–8 hours after booking. If someone was recently arrested, try again after a few hours or call the county jail directly.
